Safe and efficient ear cleaner

 What is ear wax?

Have you ever used a cotton swab to clean the inside of your ear? This seemingly harmless act, often used to remove excess ear wax, is actually a dangerous method and medical professionals strongly warn against it. The correct method, apart from contacting your doctor, is to prepare an ear wax removal tool. It is important to note that if you are inexperienced, I recommend referring to your doctor.
According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (AAOHNS), one of the most common causes of hearing loss is earwax blockage - this is usually caused by trying to clean the ear with a cotton swab.

Why do ears need cleaning?
Although ear wax is a naturally occurring substance with health benefits, excess ear wax can actually lead to hearing loss. Audiologists recommend that people clean their ears daily with a hot, wet towel in the bath or shower. The ears should be dried thoroughly afterwards.
Sometimes extra cleaning is needed, especially if an individual produces excessive ear wax. When excessive ear wax is produced, it needs to be cleaned out to prevent ear wax from becoming embedded. According to AAOHNS, ear wax impaction is characterised by the following symptoms.
Earache
Fullness in the ear
Feeling like the ear is blocked
Tinnitus, ringing in the ears or other noises
Itching, odour or discharge
Coughing
Fever

So how should we clean our ears?
To avoid these symptoms it is important to follow safe protocols when cleaning your ears. Most cases of earwax blockage can be remedied using ear wax removal kit that soften the earwax, but you should consult your hearing healthcare professional to be sure.
The most effective home remedy is to apply drops of oil to the ear. Many household oils such as mineral oil, baby oil and even olive oil can soften hard, obstructed ear wax. Many pharmacies also offer over-the-counter ear wax removal kits, which include oils or glycerine that can also soften stubborn ear wax. Detergent drops, such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, available at most pharmacies or drugstores, may also help to remove ear wax. To use oil or detergent drops, tilt your head to one side and place 5 to 10 drops of oil into the affected ear. Hold this position for at least 10 minutes and then hold your head upright. Then use the ear cleaner to remove excess ear wax. It is important to choose the right strength rinse for you. Most of ear cleaning kit available today allow you to adjust the strength of the water jet.

It is also important to note that you should clean your ears at regular intervals to avoid excess ear wax causing blockages. An earwax removal kit costs around $80, while an audiologist visit costs more than that. Maintaining good cleaning habits will save you a fortune, as well as safeguarding your ears and your health.
