Biodegradable rubbish bags - do your bit for the environment

Plastic bags kill at least 100,000 marine animals every year. Eighty per cent of this marine plastic comes from land. In other words, the plastic trash rack you use is probably killing leatherback turtles on the other side of the world. However, while the situation may seem hopeless, you can make a difference by using biodegradable plastic bags, as they can significantly reduce plastic pollution.

To ensure that you are contributing to a greener future, using eco-friendly and small trash bags is essential!
Around 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. A plastic bag takes 1000 years to decompose in a landfill. These bags are not recyclable and end up in landfills, rivers and oceans. However, plastic bags pose a threat even as they decompose. Plastic bags in landfills can leach toxins and microplastics. They can contain harmful chemicals that can contaminate water sources that reach wildlife and humans. While it is impossible to stop using plastic in all areas of life, we can switch to biodegradable rubbish bags. Some of these bags take longer to decompose in landfill than in the open environment, but they are still a more environmentally friendly option than plastic bags.

Here are all the reasons why you should switch to biodegradable 4 gallon trash bag
1. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Compared to plastic bags, biodegradable bags emit fewer greenhouse gases. This is because they are made from plants, such as corn and sugar cane. These plants absorb carbon as they grow, which offsets the carbon they release as they decompose.

2. Faster breakdown time
Compared to plastic bags, biodegradable black trash bags break down up to 1000 times faster, provided they are in the right environment. Compostable waste bags start the decomposition process as soon as they are exposed to moisture or fungi and bacteria. This leads to faster breakdown times.
However, some compostable bags should be handled in commercial facilities as they require high temperatures to decompose.

3. Don't turn into microplastics
Biodegradable rubbish bags decompose completely. Most importantly, they do not turn into microplastics like regular plastic bags do. Microplastics end up in our organisms and can lead to health problems over time, so biodegradable bags are a much safer option.

However, there are a few curbside programs that do accept regular kitchen waste bags, although these are not common.

Compostable materials are made from bioplastics derived from plant starches. Microorganisms can break down compostable kitchen bags made from corn starch without producing any toxic plastic by-products. In other words, you don't have to worry about these bags breaking down and producing toxic by-products such as heavy metals. Unlike biodegradable rubbish bags, each compostable bag is regulated by the government. Under compostable conditions, the compost needs to decompose in the soil within 180 days. Compostable conditions mean that they are in a high temperature industrial composting facility.

Now the term "compostable conditions" is a problem for domestic users like you. When you throw compostable bags into the compost heap, they are still visible even after 180 days. Therefore, before buying compostable bags, you need to make sure they are marked as 'domestic'.

Biodegradable bags are petroleum-based products that are infused with heavy metals. Because they are petroleum-based, they are similar to regular kitchen waste bags. Microorganisms living in landfills can detect that the bags are infused with heavy metals. Mistaking them for food, these microbes will break them down into lower forms of plastic.

Another difference between compostable and biodegradable is that the latter is not regulated by the government.
